Welcome

Welcome to the department Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology comprises of highly skilled, well-equipped ophthalmologists and professional staff providing a complete range of medical treatment and surgical care for both routine and complex eye-related disorders. The staff handle internal referrals from other departments of the hospital and tertiary referrals from other hospitals. Our ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists, nurses, photographers, and technicians provide specialized services in cornea and external disease, comprehensive ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastic ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, genetics, glaucoma, retina/vitreous disorders, low vision, adult/pediatric optometry, and contact lens fitting.

As we strive to improve the services we provide to patients and to meet the expanding hospital demands, we continue to place a special emphasis on providing the highest standard of patient care. Our patients have access to a complete range of services in Ophthalmology by the multidisciplinary teams of ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists, specialized nurses, nurse assistants, ophthalmic assistants, ophthalmic photographers and ophthalmic technicians dedicated only to Ophthalmology. Specialist services are provided by ophthalmologists trained in the appropriate five sub- specialties.

Scope of Services:

  • Providing clinical investigation, basic research and treatment of heritable and genetic ocular disorders, in collaboration with the research center to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases on vision impairment in Saudi Arabia.
  • Pediatric ophthalmologists work regularly with attending physicians in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to screen infants for "Retinopathy of the Prematurity" (ROP) and treat them when deemed necessary to avoid irreversible blindness.
  • Orbit and Oculoplastic clinic is unique in KFSH&RC, and is the only one in Saudi Arabia. We introduced different management procedures and strategies in collaboration with Head & Neck, Irradiation Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial, and Neuro-interventionist as parts of multidisciplinary management of orbital pathology.
  • Oculoplastic section in the ophthalmology services introduced a new approach of the ocular exenteration procedure that facilitates less disfiguring surgical results for our oncology/orbital patients.
  • Anterior Segment section in the ophthalmology services to cater the cataract patients and in near future the corneal transplant surgeries will be included.
  • Vitreous-Retinal surgery has been opened to cater to our retina complex surgeries referred from other departments. Alleviating referring our patients outside ophthalmology.
  • Collaboration on Clinical Trials at the international level.
  • Obtaining systemic history for all patients, and updating it annually, in particular to diabetic patients.

Eye openers

The eye is the organ of sight, a nearly spherical hollow globe filled with fluids (humors). The outer layer (sclera, or "white of the eye", and cornea) is fibrous and protective. The middle layer (choroid, ciliary body and the iris) is vascular. The innermost layer (retina) is sensory nerve tissue that is light sensitive. The fluids in the eye are divided by the lens into the vitreous humor (behind the lens) and the aqueous humor (in front of the lens). The lens itself is flexible and suspended by ligaments which allow it to change shape to focus light on the retina, which is composed of sensory neurons.
