In a globally groundbreaking achievement, King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) successfully performed the world’s first fully robotic heart transplant on a 16-year-old patient suffering from end-stage heart failure. This pioneering achievement, overcoming the significant medical challenges associated with such procedures, reinforces Saudi Arabia’s leadership in healthcare and highlights KFSHRC’s ability to innovate medical practices that enhance treatment outcomes and patient experiences.
The procedure, which took two and a half hours, was performed by an exceptional medical team led by Saudi cardiac surgeon, Dr. Feras Khaliel, Head of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at KFSHRC, following weeks of meticulous preparation.

The Heart Centre is proud to participate in this year’s World Patient Safety Day, under the theme of improving diagnosis for patient safety. A correct and timely diagnosis is essential for effective treatment, requiring close collaboration between patients and their health care teams throughout the diagnostic process. Errors at any stage can lead to delays, incorrect treatments, or missed diagnoses, with potentially serious consequences.
With the slogan “Get it right, make it safe!”, this year’s event emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis in enhancing patient safety. The Heart Centre provides a range of specialized services that support physicians in making precise diagnoses, including non-invasive testing, perfusionist services, Cath Lab procedures, genetic screening, Cardiac OR, and expert nursing care.
On this day, patients, families, health workers, leaders, and policymakers came together to highlight the critical role of diagnosis in safeguarding health outcomes.
